Why People Are So Superficial
The vast majority of people live superficial lives, existing solely to satisfy their immediate needs and wants with no consideration in mind beyond just getting through the present moment. What makes this behavior so tragic is that human beings have the capability to live much more deep, rich, emotional, meaningful, multifaceted, creative, courageous lives.
People are superficial because they have no idea there is an alternative. They go about their days doing what they’ve always done: going to their jobs, completing tasks, buying stuff, doing recreational activities, socializing, talking about hobbies or current events or the weather or the kids or family or work, thinking and feeling the same things, and being the same people they were in high school. They don’t reflect or change or grow significantly. They just exist.
What’s missing from this type of life experience is anything beyond just getting by day-to-day. There’s no nuance, complexity, or emotional depth. There are reasons people live this way, they get something out of it.

A superficial life is incredibly appealing to the vast majority of people because it’s the only thing they know. People have been living this way for eons because they haven’t been exposed to different options. There is a much better path and it starts with changing your behavior.

Imagine a world populated by people living deeply, joyfully, and expansively. We could get rid of so much of the petty strife that occurs at every level of society because people would be living profoundly fulfilling, emotionally healthy lives. We could work together instead of competing, we could create a kind world instead of a cutthroat one. We could treat ourselves and each other much better. There would be no limit to what we could do, all because we had the courage to move away from superficiality.
We’ve been doing the old stuff that doesn’t work for a long time though we are capable of far more. I propose we leave superficiality behind and go deeper. It will make all of us much happier. What are your thoughts?
